Halloween Dance Party 2009

Representing Nepal at the Plano International Festival 2011

Plano International Festival is an annual event organized in the City of Plano, Texas to educate, enlighten and enrich the multicultural experience of all of its citizens. The festival aims to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of the city.

The festival started in 2005 and this was first year it saw representation from Nepal.

Performances by TexasNepal dancers
We performed two traditional Nepali dances at the event. Our first performance was Kauda dance performed by Anu Pandey, Shristi Ghimire and Subhangi Krishnaraj. Our second performance was Manjushree dance performed by Dikchhya Bhatta.

TexasNepal wishes to thank Dikchhya Bhatta for volunteering to choreograph the dances as well as performing at the event. We are also thankful to Anu Pandy, Shristi Ghimire and Subhangi Krishnaraj for volunteering to participate at the event.

Kauda Dance
Kauda Dance is a very attractive dance and it belongs to the Magar Community in the western part of Nepal. The Magar community is one of the ancient ethnic groups in Nepal settled in the southern and western part of the Mahabharat. The essence of this dance is coordination and graceful steps . Smoothness of dancers and their movements are a delight to any spectator.

Manjushree Dance
This Main Classical form of Nepal is called Charya and is widely known as The Newari Nepali classical dance of Nepal. According to the Buddhist Legend, The oldest of the Bodhisattvas,The Great Monk Manjushree came from Tibet and worshiped the self existent flame at the age of the Lake called “tau daha” and drained all the water that covered Kathmandu valley by cutting through ridges of ‘Chaubhahar’ at its rim with his flaming magical sword, making the valley good for habitation. The famous Swayambhu Maha Chaitya on the west of Kathmandu marks the place of self existent flame. This Manjushree dance is a dance praises and explains the courage,Eloquence,intelligence,traits and characteristics of the Great Monk Manjushree.

- A two-room addition to a lower secondary school in the village of Phuleli
- A four-room addition and new sanitation facility to a higher secondary school in the village of Basa
- A new primary school campus with working toilets and fresh water supply in Chiwang
- Environmental and sanitation improvements using a pilot biogas toilet system harnessing gas produce by fermentation of organic matter for cooking fuel and electricity

Janai Purnima is a sacred Hindu festival when people who have undergone the sacred thread ritual Bratabandha, change their sacred thread known as Janai in Nepali. Kwati Purnima is observed mainly among Newari community of Nepal in which they prepare a special soup made out of nine different varieties of beans mixed together which is known as Kwati. Gaijatra means festival of cows (gai means cow and jatra means festival in Nepali). Gaijatra is another Newari festival which commemorates the death of people in the family during the year. It has also evolved as a festival of comedy and satire.

Karma Band is one of the popular Nepali pop music bands with hits like “Hukka Mero”, “Mauntama”, “Kaha Hola Ghar Bara”, “Chhaina Maile”.

TheBigMount is introducing NepTrenz, a fashion enthusiast group, who will be coordinating the Fashion Extravaganza at the event. Special guests for the Fashion Extravaganza include Priyanka Karki (Miss Teen 2005), Samragi Swar (Miss ANA 2009) and Nabina Basnet (Model Coordinator & Choreographer ANA 2011).

Besides performance by Karma Band and the Fashion Extravaganza there will be several live performances by local Nepali talents from Houston.

Astha is a 21 year-old rising talented Nepali nep-pop singer/songwriter from Toronto. She has been writing songs since she was 14 and already has two independent album released. Some of her hits include “Sabai Thikai Huncha”, “Gotta Be Love”.

There were eighteen models participants from all over the United States. First round of the show was dedicated to promoting Nepal Tourism Year 2011 with dresses highlighting Nepali culture and tradition. Second round included traditional wears while the third round featured evening wears.

Pratikchhya Shrestha designed the outfits and did a wonderful job. The show was choreographed by Hemanta Gurucharya and Sarah Gurung.

The panel of judges included actress Gauri malla, actor Saroj Khanal, music video director Rosan Pratab Rana, President of ANA Simon Dhungana, Miss Asia 2010 Asma Bhattachan.

This was the fourth ANA Fashion Extravaganza. The first ANA Fashion Extravaganza took place at the ANA Convention 2008 in Baltimore.
