NFPJ’s Calendar Featuring Rekha Thapa Out

National Forum of Photo Journalists (NFPJ) has published a special edition calendar for the year 2070. NFPJ President Kabindra Man Shakya, senior photo journalist Bikash Rauniyar, and representative of Nepal Tourism Board Sudhan Subedi collaboratively launched the calendar at a grand ceremony held at Bhrikutimandap on May 19, Sunday.

The annually published calendar, for this year, features renowned actress Rekha Thapa who is seen enacting as a photo journalist. Speaking at the event, Shakya said that using a popular figure would help the general public understand the job of photojournalism better and also attract young students towards the profession. Rauniyar praised the calendar adding it gives a good representation of photojournalism.

The photos in the calendar show how a photo journalist works and all the aspects they have to experience while working.

Nisha Adhikari’s Successful Climb To Everest Summit

Nisha Adhikari has become the first Nepali actress to scale Mt. Everest! Adhikari successfully climbed the highest peak in the world on May 21, Tuesday after stepping on the summit at 8:00 am as informed by Tourism Ministry officials. The Sungava star and actor Arjun Karki had left for the Everest base camp on April 9. Karki reached the summit on Monday, May 20.

Adhikari had prepared a year in advance for this trip where she went as an assistant of the Chinese expedition team and was accompanied by 11 other people including Karki.

Last month, she had come under controversy for not acquiring a climbing permit from the Ministry of Tourism to the Everest Pollution Control Committee, according to national daily Republica.

Nepali Woman Becomes First South Asian To Receive Doctor Of Letters In US

Boston-based social activist Bishnu Maya Pariyar has become the first South Asian to be awarded with honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) from Pine Manor College, the 102-years-old well known educational institution in Massachusetts of the USA. She is also become the first Nepali woman to be awarded DLitt from an American university.

Bishnu Maya, who graduated from the same college in Social Change and International Development, has been recognized for her undeterred contributions to the upliftment of Dalit women in Nepal. The college honored her for works to women’s empowerment through the Boston-based Empower Dalit Women of Nepal (EDWON) and Nepal-based Association for Dalit Women’s Advancement of Nepal (ADWAN), according to the college.

“I’m from Nepal. The world’s tallest mountain is in Nepal and Gautam Buddha, apostle of peace, is our asset,” Bishnu told an august ceremony while accepting the honor. “I dedicate this honor to the people of Nepal.”

Bishnu’s organization has provided education opportunities to some 10,000 students from the Dalit and other marginalized and poor communities while more than 2,000 deprived women have benefited from her women’s empowerment activities.

One of thenine children of Rup Bahadur Pariyar and Kanmaya Pariyar of Taklung village of Gorkha district, Bishnu has not only managed to come out of long struggles herself but has even managed to make an impact on thousands of others’ lives.

Controversial First Live Video Call From Mt. Everest

A British mountaineer´s interview with the BBC on his smartphone from the top of Mount Everest has stirred controversy with the Nepalese government calling the broadcast “illegal”, officials said Monday.

British mountaineer Daniel Thomas Hughes gave a live video interview to the BBC on his smartphone from the 8,848-metres (29,029-feet) peak on Sunday morning.

“This is the world´s first live video call — never been done before — from the rooftop of the world,” said the climber while breathing heavily through an oxygen mask and wearing a clown´s red nose for charity.

“I don´t have a camera man with me. It´s me with a pole, an HTC smartphone…and of course my red nose. It´s a very proud moment to be here and two-and-a-half years in the making,” he added.

The mountain has had mobile phone coverage for several years.

But Purnachandra Bhattarai, joint secretary of Nepal´s tourism ministry, told AFP Hughes had broken the law by not seeking permission from the government for his broadcast.

“Even the tourism ministry has to seek permission from the communication ministry to film, broadcast or conduct media related events on Everest,” Bhattarai said.

He said Hughes´ trekking agency was under investigation as a result of the incident but did not elaborate further.

During a so-called “fair weather” window on Sunday, 146 people reached the summit of the world´s highest peak, featuring teams claiming records for the first women from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, Indian sisters as the first twins, and a British climber completing the feat for his eleventh time.

Hughes was climbing to raise money for a Britain-based charity.

The mountain has become a popular symbolic pilgrimage site for record-setting, awareness-raising, and pledge drives for charities, which have increased crowds on the mountain.

Last year, more than 250 climbers reached the summit in a 48-hour stretch of good weather despite warnings of potentially deadly bottlenecks in the “death zone” above 8,000 metres.

A brawl between European climbers and Nepalese Sherpas high on the mountain in April cast a shadow over the climbing season, which marks the 60th anniversary of Edmund Hillary´s and Tenzing Norgay´s maiden summit.

“This summit season has already been marked by controversy and we don´t want it to happen again,” said Bhattarai.

BREAKING NEWS: Fire At Thamel – Updated

A restaurant at Thamel, Faces Lounge caught fire after gas cylinder exploded. Another popular outlet, Shisha Cafe & Terrace Bar, which is right next to the lounge is also said to have been affected. Further details have not been known yet.

A massive fire that broke out in Thamel on Thursday night has finally come under control after nine hours on Friday morning.The fire is brought under control after using fire brigades from Lalitpur, Bhaktapur and Kathmndu districts and more than two dozens of private water tanks to douse the fire.

It has been estimated that the the fire has destroyed property worth millions. The fire has destroyed the Thamel-based Pilgrim Books House and the books stored at the shop along with the three houses of Sher Bahadur Shahi and Ajaya Shahi.

Voting Rights, Even For Visually Impaired

For the first time in Nepal’s election history, visually impaired people will now also be able to vote in the next CA elections. After long discussions, the Election Commission (EC) came to the conclusion to prepare ballot papers in Braille for the visually impaired.

According to The Himalayan Times, EC Commissioner Dolakh Bahadur Gurung said preparations to make the polling booths disabled -friendly have started at places where there is road transport in the district headquarters. A disabled friendly ramp will be made for wheel chair users, said Gurung.

The Commission is to adopt process for voting through voters list with photo all over the country. This will enable minimization of voting on another’s name and ensure impartial election. The commission has so far collected name list of 11.l3 million voters with photos. Voting through electronic voting machine used in Kathmandu Constituency-1 in the first CA election will be extended this time. But it is not yet decided in which districts it will be used.

Voters are eager to vote as election environment is created as it was found in interactions in 15 places in 44 districts, the EC said. On this, Commissioner Gurung also said voters are excited and they want election.

Prison Break In Rolpa, 3 Escapees Held

Almost six months after 12 prisoners from the Jhumka-based eastern regional prison fled to freedom after digging a tunnel, eight inmates from a jail in Rolpa escaped on Saturday night using the same technique. Three of the escapees, however, have been arrested.

According to reports, the prisoners fled the detention centre by digging an eight-metre long tunnel under their cell. Police have identified the jail breakers as Arjun Sen of Khungri, Dhruba Dangi of Jugar, Champeng BK of Jedawang, Raj Bahadur Oli of Jangkot, Basanta Roka of Rangkot, Krishna Bahadur Oli of Dhabang, Deepak Pun and Raju Thapa of Saigha, Dang.

Sen, who was doing time for smuggling rhino’s horns, was arrested from a forest in Saatdobato and the other two, Pun and BK, were apprehended from Madichaur. BK, Dangi and Raj Bahadur Oli are rape convicts while Roka, Pun, Thapa and Krishna Bahadur Oli were serving for their involvement in the cases of dacoity.

There were 11 inmates in the cell under which the tunnel was dug but three of them chose not to escape.

The prison building had been housing prisoners more than its capacity. In the ‘D’ class of the prison alone there were 84 prisoners, more than twice its capacity.

Police learnt about the jailbreak half an hour after it occurred. Jailer Dilip Shrestha was on leave yesterday and by 8pm Prison Department Security in-charge Sub-inspector Basanta Basnet had completed his duty and handed the responsibility to Sub-inspector Salikram Basnet. There were 19 security men led by the SI for the security of the prison.

Monday’s Bandh Withdrawn

The agitating 33 political parties, including the Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist, called off Monday’s banda, considering the Rato Machchhindranath Jatra which will be observed on the same day.

A meeting of those parties Sunday decided to call of their nationwide strike they had planned in protest of controversial former chief secretary Lok Man Singh Karki’s appointment as chief of Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority.

Their other programs of protest will remain unchanged, the parties said.

Samriddhi Rai’s Journey Back To Miss Tourism Queen

Goodwill Ambassador for Nepal as appointed by Nepal Tourism Board, Samriddhi Rai is representing Nepal at Miss Tourism Queen Asia 2013, according to statement released by Group Of Event Entertainers ( G.E.E ).

On the occasion of of the pageant’s 10^th anniversary celebration, the contest this time has been designed to be participated by Asian candidates only (about 40 countries) as opposed to more than 120 countries in the year 2011 and is taking place in Xitang Province of China from May 10- 18.

Rai, who returned home with the title of ‘Miss Personality’ during her participation at Miss Tourism Queen International 2011, was invited back by the International Organisers ERM to take part in the pageant.

Multi-talented Loot Director Basnet Sings For ‘Karkash’

Director of blockbuster hit Loot, Nischal Basnet has made one more addition to his long list of professions. Basnet, who’s directed and acted in the film Fitkiri, has performed two songs for the movie Karkash scheduled to be released on June 14, 2013 (Jestha 31, 2070).

“We requested Nischal to sing for us since we were looking for a different voice,” shared director of the upcoming feature film Asif Shah, “In fact, his performance has proved he’s no less than a professional singer.” There are a total of four songs in the film, the other two have been sung by singer Dharmendra Sewan.

On the other hand, Basnet has revealed that singing is one of his interests but hadn’t been able to continue in the profession due to some reasons. He has also sung in the item song for Loot. As if that wasn’t enough, Basnet also used to play for Sankata Football Club and even did a bit in swimming.

Nepal defeated Uganda by 5 wickets and secured the champions title in the final of ICC World Cricket League Division 3 today at the National Stadium, Hamilton.

Uganda won the toss and elected to bat first where Nepal stopped Uganda to 151 runs in 50 overs. Nepal then chased down the target scoring 153 runs in 39.2 overs losing 5 wickets. Pradeep Airee and Sharad Veswarkar played outstanding role with their half centuries to promote Nepal to Division 2 League.

Nepal already secured its promotion to the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2014 after their final group matches of the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 defeating Italy by eight wickets on Saturday.

I-Book And Song For Uma Released

The official release of one song of the highly anticipated movies Uma took place on May 5, Sunday. The program also saw the launch of an I-Book of the film – the first time ever for a Nepali feature film.

Uma, the feature film directed by Tsering Rhitar Sherpa and produced by his production company Mila Productions Pvt. Ltd. went on the floor on November, 2012. Set in the early 2000s, during the Maoist insurgency, when Nepal was going through one of the biggest conflicts in the country’s history, comes a story about a widowed mother and her two children – son Milan and daughter Uma. Inspired by true events, the film’s story revolves around a brother and sister who are separated by circumstances caused by ideological differences.

The film is gaining a lot of buzz and interest on social media, especially on Facebook.

One of the highlights has been the recent tweet by ex-Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai who wrote, “I feel good realistic films are strong tools for social change. Would like to see UMA when time permits. Happy May Day to all workers.”

No doubt the above tweet by former prime minister and Vice-Chairperson of UCPN (Maoist) has increased the profile of the film, which already reached #1 on a recent online poll as one of the most anticipated films.

As the film gets ready for a May 24 release, the film’s production company Mila Productions Pvt. Ltd has signed with an NY based NGO Empower1, who has reserved the rights to screen the film in the US and Canada.

The film has 3 songs; the music video for the song by Abhaya and the Steam Injuns titled ‘Sirima Siri’ has already garnered 65k+ likes on youtube. The next song to be released is music maestro Gopal Yonzan’s ‘Bann ki Chari’. It is a 4-minute song picturised in the backdrop of Uma and Milan’s village and shows the progress of Uma and Anil’s relationship.

Keeping in mind the relevance and importance of online campaigns an ibook will soon be released. The ibook, available for free on itunes, will give a comprehensive look on all aspects of the film and will be a multi-media treat as the readers will get an extended look into various aspects of the film through text, photos, interviews, audio and video bites. After it’s itunes release, it will be made available for android based phones as well. Such a promotional campaign will be the first of its kind in Nepal.

The film is scheduled for a May 24, Jesth 10 release and will be distributed by DCN.

KJC Celebrates Int’l Jazz Day

A celebration of jazz music took place at Moksh, Jhamsikhel on April 30, Tuesday. Renowned professional music school Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory (KJC) hosted its annual International Jazz Day 2013 where jazz musicians from all over Kathmandu alongside faculty members of the school performed followed by an open jam session. The venue resonated with superb jazz music and relishing it were who’s who of Kathmandu along with the regular music lovers.

The Jazz Day saw a string of fantastic performances from Hari Maharjan, Riju Tuladhar, Pawan Tandukar, Sameer Chettri, Sarthak Upadhaya and Kiran Shahi while Cecilie Giskemo from Norway, Marcus Dengate from Australia and Alvaro Torres from Spain joined the lineup.

The musical event also featured acts like Jazz drum solo, bass trio and some soothing acoustic jazz vocals by Nepal Music Center (NMC) and KJC students and faculty members.

Nepal’s first and only Jazz Magazine, ‘Hamro Jazz’, was also formally launched during the event.

And sidelining all her contenders to take the crown, Sarmila Hamal has won the title of the 11th Kid Queen Nepal! Imagine- Cable Cars In Kathmandu!

Good news for those fed up with daily traffic congestion and worsening pollution in Kathmandu. B&S Urban Cable Car is planning to operate cable cars in the capital to offer its residents hassle-free movement in a clean environment. This will provide an alternative mode of transport in the Valley, which is full of narrow roads and devoid of any underground sub-ways.

B&S Urban Cable, a Nepali firm, is carrying out a detailed study to operate urban cable cars in Kathmandu. Entrepreneurs Bhawani Rana and Shyam Mohan Shrestha are the promoters of the firm.

The cost of the project has been estimated for between Rs 13 billion to Rs 14 billion at current prices. The cost will hover between Rs 15 billion to Rs 20 billion when the project is completed in four years, with the rise in cost of production over the period, according to Rana. She also added that many foreign companies have shown interest in working with B&S Urban Cable, and they are currently holding talks with some French companies.

NAC To Purchase Two Planes

It was announced on Monday (April 29, 2013) that Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) had signed an agreement with Airbus for the purchase of two short- to medium-range A320 planes in a deal worth $183 million (140 million euros) at catalogue prices.

The planes will come with so-called “sharklets”, fin-like devices fixed at the end of wings to reduce fuel burn, and can also be fitted with a navigation technique called RNP that allows an aircraft to fly precisely along a specific path.

According to Airbus, RNP would be “particularly useful for operations at high altitude airports which are constrained by mountains such as (the capital) Kathmandu.”

“For a landlocked nation, aviation really is our window to the world and the world’s window to us,” Madan Kharel, managing director of NAC, said in the statement.

“Adding the A320 to our fleet will help us to capitalise on tourism growth and to enhance our network using the most fuel efficient aircraft available.”

Founded in 1958, NAC currently flies to four international destinations and 25 domestic airports in the heart of the Himalayas.

Planes are a key method of transport in the mountainous country, where some remote areas can be accessed more easily by air than by road.

Taremaam- OST To Karkash Revealed

The original soundtrack (OST) to the upcoming movie Karkash was unveiled at a function held at Mandala Theatre, Anamnagar on April 30, Tuesday. ‘Taremaam’ is the theme song of the film directed by Asif Shah. The single has been composed and performed by Karma band while Ranjit Acharya has penned it. Its music video was also screened at the event.

The OST was released one month after the launch of its theatrical trailer and posters. Karkash will release worldwide on June 14, 2013.

Karkash is the first feature length film, produced by A G21 Production Pvt. Ltd. in association with Idea and Images, stars Suraj Singh Thakuri, Satya Raj Acharya, Raymon Das Shrestha and Daya Hang Rai, along with Rajendra Khadgi, Looniva Tuladhar, Rajan Ishan, Harshika Shrestha, Ragini Khadgi, Joseph Sebastian, Shishir Bangdel, and Dutch actress Catalijne Janssen amongst others.

A biography of veteran actor and comedian Haribansha Acharya has been revealed. Titled ‘Cheena Harayeko Manchey’, the book was launched at Moksh, Jhamsikhel on April 28. The ceremony was graced by the presence of a number of personalities.

The biography has been published by FinePrint and has been a collaborative effort between Acharya, short-story writer Dr Rabindra Sameer and Madan Puraskar Laureate Amar Neupane.

Although Acharya was very happy, about his life story coming out in book, he expressed his uneasiness at the event since it coincided with his late wife’s death anniversary.

Acharya and Madan Krishna Shrestha, together known as ‘MaHa’ have always been a house name in the comedy business. Madan Puraskar Laureate Neupane praised the book as being an honest and innocent documentation of Acharya’s life. “The book is full of moments that will make you laugh and cry,” he commented.

‘Cheena Harayeko Manchey’ has also come out in 2,000 limited edition copies priced at Rs 2,000. The publishers claim that this is the first limited edition phenomena in Nepal.

The proceedings from the book will go towards Meera Care Center, an organization working for the development of poor children in Nepal.
Cheena Harayeko Manchey is priced at Rs 398 and can be found in major bookstores in town.

Kid Queen Nepal Contestants Flaunt Their Talent

All the contestants from Kid Queen Nepal showcased their talent April 27 (14th Baisakh, 2070) at 1999 A.D. Party Palace. Different contestants with different performed their talents through various forms. Some danced while some sang, some gave speech on various topics while some presented art and handicraft as their special skills.

To name a few, Miss Puja Maharjan performed Annapurna Dance form, Sakshi Rajak painted a beautiful scene, Salina Koirala sang a melodious song ‘Jaha Chhan Buddha Ka Ankha’. Likewise, Anisha Chhetri and Tenjing Lhoden Lama danced in beautiful Nepali and Newari numbers respectively. Swornim Sandhya Maharjan demonstrated her talent of defense through Karate. The performances were very outstanding and all the contestants gave their best to get the award and crown of the title Miss Talent, which shall be awarded on the Grand Finale.

The 40 contestants of Kid Queen Nepal- 2013 performed in front of 11 jury members . The host of the program was Miss Jenisha Manandhar.

The preparation for the big day continues as all the participants are having regular training at Hamro Cafe, New road. They are being choreographed by Miss Rohiya Maharjan. The main event will be held at Nepal Academy, Kamaladi on May 1, 2013 (Baisakh 18, 2070).

Yogendra Mani Dahal Offers His ‘Maya Nai Maya’

Renowned lyricist Yogendra Mani Dahal has presented his latest album titled ‘Maya Nai Maya’ which was launched grandly on April 26, 2013 (Baisakh 13, 2070) at Baithak Event Venue, Tripureshwore.

All the songs in the album have been written by Dahal and composed by great musician Raju Singh and bringing to life with vocals are 10 popular artistes from Nepali music scene. To name a few, Ciney Gurung, Prashna Shakya, Reema Gurung Hoda, and Shreya Sotang.

The album is a presentation of Manhattan Music.

Talent Show and Live Band Competition

ANA is looking to showcase your talent. Nepali origins from North America and around the world are invited to submit your application and we will select up to 20 acts to be featured on the Talent Show Night.

Also for the first time in ANA convention we are hosting live Band Competition. Bands with members of Nepali Origin are encouraged to participate by applying online. Up to five bands will be selected to perform in front of adoring crowd of more than a thousand in the audience. And as this is a competition, Bands will be judged by renowned personalities from the Nepali music field with cash prizes to be awarded.

Nepal Academy of Music And Drama Turns 3!

Nepal Academy of Music and Drama celebrated its third anniversary on April 23, 2013 (Baisakh 10, 2070) Tuesday. An event was organised to mark the occasion at Nepal Academy Hall, Kamaladi.

Chief Guest Khilraj Regmi – the Chairman of the Council of Ministers did the honours of inaugurating the function which also witnessed a special musical programme.

Ambar Gurung happens to be the current chancellor for the Nepal Academy of Music and drama.

Concert With A Canine Cause

Calling all animal lovers! A gig is being organised for the benefit of dogs. Animal Nepal in collaboration with Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory (KJC) presents For The Love of Dogs- a musical event that will take place at Attic Bar, Lazimpat on May 3 and will feature a line up of amazingly talented musicians who have come together with pure love for animals.

We see a number of street dogs in the city and although they’re called our best friends, some of us don’t treat them as so. They suffer from starvation, disease and cruelty. Most of all they suffer from ignorance of people towards them. However, as time has progressed more and more soulful humans have understood their conditions and offered help in more than one way. This fundraiser gives all the opportunity to contribute towards making a positive difference in lives of these beautiful creatures. The proceeds of this event will be directed towards helping the street dogs through health camps, community outreach and rescue operations. Furthermore 30% of the total proceeds will be handed over to “Mankind for Animals ” to support them throughout their noble effort to continue helping the dogs.

Animal Nepal is an innovative NGO established in 2004 based in Lalitpur District, Kathmandu Valley, and run by an enthusiastic team of volunteers, who are both local and overseas animal welfare campaigners and educators.

Artistes performing at the concert are Joint Family International, Subani Moktan, Axata Singh, Prajwal Mukhiya and Dev Lama and you can expect many other talented individuals to serenade you.

Tickets are priced at Rs 500 and the event starts 6pm onwards. This is your chance to support a very good cause and improve conditions of our canine buddies.
