6.7 Earthquake Rocks Northeastern India

A deadly earthquake of 6.7 magnitude on Richter scale hit northeastern India adjoining Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan on Monday (January 4, 2015).

“The quake, measuring 6.7 on the Richter Scale, occurred at 4.37 a.m and had its epicentre in Manipur’s Tamenglong district bordering,” reports Indianexpress.com as the statement issued by an official of the regional seismological centre in Meghalaya.

Various sources report at least six people are said to have died due to injuries and 100 others injured, damaging several buildings. Other reports of injuries have also come in from Siliguri district of West Bengal and the number is likely to rise.

Apart from Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura in India, the tremor was felt in different parts of Nepal, including Kathmandu Valley.
