Dr. Upendra Mahato – Personality of the Month for June 2010

upendra-mahato This month we are featuring Dr. Upendra Mahato, a very successful Nepali businessman and social worker, currently residing in Moscow, who has made a fortune to be counted among top wealthiest people of Nepali origin and also has made a mark of his own among Nepalis living abroad with establishment of Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) to bring together Nepalis living around the world for a common cause – Channeling Knowledge and Investments for Nepal’s Rapid Development.

“Honesty, hard work and luck are three important things that can make anyone successful”, says Dr. Mahato when we asked him what it takes to be a successful person like him.

Born in Siraha in 1960 Dr. Mahato went to Russia under the Soviet government’s scholarship for his higher education in 1982. Initially trained to be a hydropower engineer, he got his PhD and DSc in soil mechanics from International Academy of Information Technology, Minsk, Belarus and is the first Nepali to get a Doctor of Science in the technical field.

After completing studies in Russia, he has established himself as a very successful businessman with businesses operating in various countries belonging to the former Soviet Union. He is the current CEO of International Business in CIS countries since 1997. He is the Honorary Consular of Nepal government in the Republic of Belarus. He also has various business activities in Nepal ranging from medicine, education, mass media and hydropower.

He led to the formation of Non Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) in October of 2003 with enthusiasm to invest in Nepal. Since then NRNA has brought together Nepalis from around the world. As of today NRNA has offices in 55 countries around the world. Collective investment and dual citizenships are some of the major agendas NRNA has been advocating for.

“Do something for Nepal before you start saying bad things about Nepal”, says Dr. Mahato who dearly loves Nepal and has always been advocating the development of Nepal with involvement of non-resident Nepalis using the skills they have acquired on foreign soil.

Dr. Mahato has been awarded the “Suprawal Janasewa” award by the President of Nepal on May 29, 2010 for his remarkable service to Nepal and Nepalis.
