The very first All-Nepali Slam Poetry Competition is being organised on Saturday (July 12, 2014). Nepal’s first spoken word group The Word Warriors are hosting “Word Warriors Live: All-Nepali Slam” that is scheduled to be held at Thames International College, Old Baneshwor, Kathmandu.

A statement released by the organizers on Sunday reads, “As we’ve seen an encouraging growth in our young group members writing in Nepali – we’ve been wanting to do a slam poetry competition with poetry performances exclusively in Nepali language.”

“And as the Nepali month of Ashad is also the birth month of our Aadikavi Bhanubhakta Acharya, and the month when many of us celebrated Nepali Poetry month in our schools with Nepali Poetry Writing and Elocution Contests, we thought for this month’s edition of Word Warriors Live, it would be perfect to hold our first ever All-Nepali Slam.”

The last date to submit the online application is July 8, 2014, midnight and can be accessed through the Word Warriors or Spoken Word Nepal page on Facebook.

As per the rules of Slam competition, five random judges from the audience will judge the participants and the top-scoring 7 from the first round will move on to the second round. After the second round of recitation, the top scoring 3 performers will be announced as the winners of the event and will receive prizes from the organizers.

The organizers have also collaborated with Quixote’s Cove and the US Embassy’s BookBus project for the event. The BookBus will be at the venue open for visitors to step in and read books throughout the program from 2 pm to 5 pm, adds the statement.
