PM Koirala Leaves For Third BIMSTEC Summit In Myanmar

Prime Minister Sushil Koirala left for Myanmar to participate in the third BIMSTEC Summit as part of his first multilateral visit abroad on Sunday (March 2, 2014)As reported by NepalNews.com, PM Koirala boarded on a Thai Air plane in the afternoon to embarked on his journey.

During his visit, PM Koirala, who will lead a 15-member delegation, is scheduled to hold talks with various dignitaries including Indian Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh and Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Mahendra Pandey has already left for Myanmar, while the rest of the members of Koirala’s delegation include officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking to the press before his departure, PM Koirala said he would talk about the Summit after he returns.

The third BIMSTEC Summit will witness signing of three important documents along with evaluation of the past progress.

The signing ceremony will pave way for establishing a weather forecasting division in New Delhi, India; establishment of permanent secretariat in Dhaka, Bangladesh and setting up of a cultural centre in Thimpu, Bhutan.

The BIMSTEC stands for Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral  Technical and Economic Cooperation. Its member states include Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Myanmar.
