Police-Protesters Clash In Jhapa Leaves 22 Injured

Clashes between police personnel and landless squatters erupted at Pathari, in Damak of Jhapa on Tuesday (May 6, 2014). At least 22 people were said to have been injured.

As reported by Republica, according to Landless Squatters Struggle Committee, some protesters were injured in police action when they were trying to block the traffic along the East-West Highway demanding the government institution provide them with landownership certificates.

Informed Inspector Ram Kumar Yadav at Area Police Office, Pathari informed the paper that ten police personnel also sustained injuries in the clashes.

The protesters also set some seven vehicles ablaze for defying the transportation strike.

Vice-chairman of the Landless Squatters Struggle Committee, Kapilmani Dhakal informed that they launched the agitation to pile pressure on the authorities to provide landownership certificates to them as they have been cultivating land since long after deforestation.
