Baburam Bhattari elected as the new Prime Minister of Nepal

August 28, 2011 – Baburam Bhattarai, one of the leaders of former Maoist rebels, has been elected as the new prime minister of Nepal by voting at the parliament on Sunday.

Baburam Bhattari, 57, who is the vice-chairman of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal will be the 35th prime minister of Nepal and the fourth prime minister in four years since Nepal became a republic in 2008.

Bhattarai received a total of 340 votes in parliament while his opponent Ram Chandra Poudel of Nepali Congress received 235 votes.

Baburam Bhattarai is the second leader from his party to become the prime minister of Nepal. He has a degree in architecture and a doctorate in regional planning.
