According to media reports, the Nepal Army and the Maoist leadership have more or less agreed to all issues related to the integration of PLA combatants in the national army but are still wrangling over senior ranks to be given to the combatants who will be integrated. Maoist sources confirmed that the Nepal Army has tried to be flexible and has accommodated most of their demands.

The Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) General Chhatra Man Singh Gurung had earlier briefed the integration plan to Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai. The Prime Minister then met with the Maoist Chairman and chief of the PLA, Nanda Kishore Pun and commanders of the seven PLA divisions to discuss Nepal Army’s recommendations. The Maoists now hope that other political parties will support the recommendations of the Nepal Army.

According to Maoist sources, Nepal Army is willing to integrate 6,500 PLA combatants in a non-combat directorate and cut down the regular training and bridging courses for the PLA combatants. Nepal Army is willing to accommodate 64 PLA combatants as Majors, 120 as Captains and 96 Lieutenants and 120 Second Lieutenants. The government plans to start the integration process from March 13 but PLA commanders have urged the Maoist chairman to at least negotiate a rank of ‘Brigadier General’ for the senior Maoist combatants.
