Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo – Spanish movie filmed in Nepal

Katmandu, un espejo en el cielo (Kathmandu, a mirror in the sky) is an upcoming movie by Spanish director Icíar Bollaín filmed in Nepal. The movie tells the story of Laia, a Catalian teacher who lived in Kathmandu in the early nineties.

According to the Spanish website RTVE.es, this is the first Spanish production shot in the Himalayas and the movie itself is a highly anticipated film by Bollaín after the succes of her 2010 film ‘Even the Rain’.

This is the sixth feature film by Iciar Bollian starring Veronica Echegui. The movie was shot in the spring of 2010 between Kathmandu and Mustang and also in Barcelona.

The film tells the story of a young teacher Laia who moves to Kathmandu in the 90’s to teach at a local school. She soon discovers extreme poverty and a bleak educational system leaves out the neediest. She gets married to legalize her status and embarks on an ambitious project to educate children in the slums of Kathmandu, only to find out it cannot be done alone. With the help of a teacher friend Sharmila and her husband, Laia undertakes a journey that will take her to the bottom of Nepalese society.

The movie will be released on February 3, 2012.
