Magnitude 5.8 earthquake hits U.S. East Coast

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the U.S. East coast, originating in Virginia and was felt as far as Washington DC, New York City, Rhode Island and North Carolina.

The earthquake struck at 1:51pm Eastern time and had a depth of 3.7 miles (6 km) according to the reports by U.S. Geological Survey.

Reuters reports that the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol Building in Washington were evacuated.

The quake was centered northwest of Richmond, Virginia.
